Site specific - dance performances adapted to the environment. This year in Piņķi, maybe next year in your city?

About the festival

Vides Deja” is an international contemporary dance festival that specifically focuses on the development of the site-specific dance genre in professional contemporary dance in Latvia, while also performing educational functions – providing a different theater experience for audiences, as well as the opportunity to participate in masterclasses and creative workshops for local residents, dance enthusiasts, and especially young people.

Site-specific dance is a term often used when talking about contemporary dance that takes place outside the conventional or generally accepted stage art space. Thus, site-specific dance is a production created in a special place or environment, which is an inseparable part of the production. The environment is a source of inspiration, support, or one of the means of expression for a dance performance, installation, or show. It is a space-time with its own vibration, from which the idea of the production cannot be separated.

In addition, the festival program includes guest performances, exhibitions, dance films, and more.

One of our main partners every year is the municipality where the festival takes place.

Until now, the festival has taken place for several years in Piņķi (formerly Babīte, now Mārupe municipality), four years in Ropaži (Ropaži municipality), including one year with a masterclass and guest performance program in five locations in neighboring municipalities – Inčukalns, Ikšķile, Berģi, Suntaži, Tīnūži. The next two years the festival was hosted in Lūznava, Lūznava Manor, one year in Riga and simultaneously in Ķeipene (Ogre municipality), and the last two years in Līgatne.

Who organizes?

VIDES DEJAS festival (foundation Zvaigžņu AkA/ STARS’ WELL), in cooperation with partners, which could be you!

How to support?

By getting involved, that is, by sharing personal stories related to the surroundings, offering volunteer work, providing space/private environments for activities, as well as financially.

In 2024, VIDES DEJA returned to Piņķi. After a two-year break, the festival, in cooperation with the Babīte Cultural Education Center and Mārupe Municipality, organized three contemporary dance Saturdays in Piņķi, namely on June 8, August 10, and September 14.

The Contemporary Dance Saturdays of Vides Deja invited viewers to prepare for a cultural experience, that is, to prepare for a journey in a very practical, physical sense, as it was necessary to move or travel from one rehearsal location to another. Comfortable shoes and a bicycle were useful.

The active participants of the "Vides Deja" contemporary Saturdays prepared performances under the guidance of choreographers during the week; to see how it went, look here.
